(Long Island, NY) Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Spring 2008 in Manhattan kicked off this season with 64 designers showcasing their magnificent spring 2008 collections in the tents at Bryant Park. Many other top designers are premiering their styles down runways at other locations throughout the city. One such designer showing his fabulous collection outside of the tents was Jason Wu.
Twenty three year old Fashion Designer Jason Wu took Fashion Week by storm showcasing his sophisticated Spring 2008 collection which premiered at Exit Art in Manhattan on September 5, 2007. Before branching out on his own Jason studied at Parsons and later interned with Designer Narcisco Rodriguez. His first collection premiered Fashion Week Spring 2007. His line was demure soft, feminine black and white pieces and very ladylike. His Spring 2008 Collection is strongly diversified and a tad more edgy. Pretty fluttery flowing gowns with structured accents. An assortment of trench coats, modern shifts and beautiful full-skirted strapless frocks with a few bright colors that pop the collection. A nice touch was emphasis on detail to hand-painted plaids and a shock of an exposed zipper.
The highlight of the show was his glamorous evening pieces, tulle, chiffon and lovely blush colored dresses. I simply adored his classic “feathered” chiffon ensemble. Model Ham Jin was the star of the show wearing a tan chiffon blouse and a high-waisted black fluttery evening skirt with dainty black button detailing. During our interview Jason revealed that fashion defines who we are as individuals. “Fashion defines our era, it defines who we are. Women want to dress up more, be prettier, more mature,” Jason exclaims. Jason combines modern evening dressing with the spirit and detailing of vintage clothing in a way that is both innovative and fresh yet romantically reflective. Influenced by the photography of Irving Penn and Horst and the collection of Charles James and Christian Dior during the mid century, Jason celebrates the female form by emphasizing the hourglass silhouette and utilizing the most luxurious fabrics. Wu demonstrates his effectiveness as a top designer, his versatility in designing red carpet glam dresses as well as high fashion couture. Another high end couture glam show was Kati Stern’s Venexiana Spring 2008 Collection. During the summer months fashionista Kati Stern and her husband Sam spent holiday in their ancient palazzo in Venice, Italy. But that didn’t stop Kati from creating the most beautiful glamorous collection ever. Just when I thought she out did her self again and their is no possible way she could improve on her last fabulous collection she surprises us all with her genius and attention to couture detailing. As usual her dramatic designs personify glamorous romantic elegance of old-world Hollywood. This season’s sensuous fabrics are silk, beaded luminous chiffon and this amazing feather light linen that looks like a million bucks. Her evening collection soft and flowing encrusted with beading draped around the neck. One glamorous red carpet gown I absolutely adored was a black beaded creation that Joan Crawford would have worn on Academy Award Night to receive the Oscar for Best Actress. The Spring Collection again boast the style of Platinum Blond Silver Screen Goddess Jean Harlow 1930’s and luminous movie star Gene Tierney 1940’s ambiance of Monte Carlo. Prints were soft, colorful wispy and move like liquid. Color influences of navy and cream, paprika print and copper. Kati loves copper! “What is the inspiration for the new collection?” “Monte Carlo, the casinos and the cocktails and all that fabulous wonderful glamour.”

For Spring Kati Stern also showcased an elegant and refined mixture of navy/cream colored dresses and separates in contemporary sailor fashion. Her sportswear collection is more tailored this season. Short waisted detailed jackets combined with cuffed wide leg pants, and draped sleeveless tops in collaboration with culottes. Kati loves a variety of different designs – a navy sailor collar dress with cream eyelet, an open back dress with a cream satin collar, a cream/navy trim drawstring dress, halter dresses in floral and polka dot. Another very innovative and exciting show was Monica Byrne’s Spring and Summer Collection 2008. Monica Byrne is a self-made designer that established her style in the ferocious competitive world of Fashion, only through intense dedication to detail, fervor, and a critical eye for design. Monica has an extensive background in textile design upon graduation from the University of Kansas. Monica started to perfect her craft in the beginning by working under designer Lucy Barnes for two years as assistant designer before doing freelance work. Byrne had the chance to learn from the experts and started working under this special team of highly reputable brands such as Ralph Lauren, Gap, Anthropologie, and Donna Karan. Byrne applied her academic training and became an expert in her specialty: Handwork detailing, hand embroidery, beading, and dyeing.
The Monica Byrne collection boasts an eclectic mix of handmade imported fabrics, hand-beaded lace, and ethereal embroidery, silks, satin and chiffons and can be found in Saks Fifth Avenue in New York and Beverly Hills, as well as luxury boutiques nationwide. Monica reveals to the media about the Spring 2008 collection, “I drew my inspiration for this collection from the BBC’s Planet Earth nature documentary and I transposed the various elements of nature onto the female form. The silhouettes in this collection were inspired by the icy world of glaciers where water constantly changes from a solid to a liquid state and back again. The result is pieces that appear to have faces sculpted out of silk moire into strong yet delicate forms and other pieces that seem to flow gently like rivers of silk chiffon. The winds of a desert storm gently caress the fabric into textured ripples of sand. The translucent delicacy of raindrops is an underwater sea storm in the beadwork and ornamentation. Exotic birds and flowers in the jungles of the Amazon with their impossibly vibrant colors is unexpected combinations are the foundation of the unique color palette that I created for the collection. these garments beckon their wearers to explore and revere the treasure that is our planet earth.”
The collection was showcased on tall statuesque dance like wispy models all wearing a simple chic chignon hairstyle, “Very Ballerina.” The models all stood on fabulous Birch trees that were provided by American Foliage. No live trees were cut or harmed for the production of the fashion show and all cosmetics used on the models were 100% cruelty-free. Some of the fabulous celebrities that attended were Americas Top Model Nigel Barker, Project Runway Malan Breton, Costume Designer Rosemary Ponzo and Brooks Editor and Chief of Talent In Motion Magazine.
