News: Off-Duty Officer Caught on Tape
(Long Island, N.Y.) Several incidents of gun use have made headlines in recent weeks after being captured on video surveillance, but none of them involved a police officer. Last Tuesday, video surveillance at a Farmingdale pub captured an off-duty Nassau County Police Officer pulling out his gun and pointing it at the pub’s bartender. No criminal charges have been filed against the officer.
Information was released today about the incident and the officer-in-question has since been suspended without pay. He awaits disciplinary action and reports stated that a thorough investigation will be conducted by the Nassau County District Attorney. His suspension will last during the course of the internal investigation.
The Nassau County Police Department has reportedly launched an administrative investigation that involves interviewing witnesses and reviewing the surveillance video. The incident occurred on April 26th at South Main Street Pub in Farmingdale. Though no charges have been filed, reports stated that the Nassau County Police Department confirmed misconduct and the inappropriate use of a gun.
The video, which has been made available to the public, shows the officer at the pub with a friend after hours. The bartender claims that the officer was already drunk upon arrival and grew belligerent before pulling out a gun and pointing it directly at him. During this time, the bartender was pouring a drink with his back turned toward the officers.
The surveillance video also shows the officer pulling out his gun a second time to remove the ammunition before setting it on the bar. It’s uncertain whether the officer had been drinking at the bar, but the bartender has yet to file charges against the officer. More information is expected to be released during the process of the administrative investigation.
Perhaps a bigger issue in the case is concerning how the officer got to the pub and whether he was driving. The surveillance video shows the officer pulling up to the pub and hitting the curb before entering the pub with his friend. No reports have mentioned anything about the friend’s intoxication level and whether he’d have been better behind the wheel.
Though the officer could not be reached for an interview, his neighbors were contacted to speak about the incident. They claim that the officer is a good man who made the common mistake of drinking too much on a particular evening. One neighbor claimed that he never gave anyone any problems and could always be seen with a smile on his face.
Some followers of the case aren’t as understanding and have a less lenient take on what should have been done to the officer. They claim that if a civilian had committed the same offense, the consequences would most likely ensure automatic jail time. One report stated that the officer will be going to a rehabilitation facility. A friend of the officer’s claimed that he knows he made a mistake and regrets it.
