JoAnn Maroldo is a self-taught artist. Her soothing paintings of nature are characterized by a sense of tranquility and solitude. Whether painting in pastels or oils, she invites the viewer into her art work with her intricate details sharing her goals with art lovers in the beauty she finds in her surroundings.
JoAnn lives in Westhampton, Long Island and travels with her camera close at hand to capture the ideal moment when nature casts that perfect light and shadow. Her passion is painting beach chairs, sun-filled porches, architecture and the shoreline and loves the challenge of commission work.
Her oil paintings can be seen exclusively in Chrysalis Gallery in Southampton, and her pastels are seen in many art shows on Long Island as well as Florida. She has obtained numerous awards, and her paintings have been chosen many times to appear on art posters and travel magazines for the town of Westhampton Beach.

I also had the chance to interview Artist Carol Saxe during her book signing for her recent publication ‘The Dog Lovers’ Guide to the Good Life’ at the Chrysalis Art Gallery. This humorous publication is illustrated by Carol and co-written with Hanita Blumfield. The Dog Lovers’ Guide is a wonderful gift, conversation piece or coffee table book.
The Dog Lovers’ Guide to the Good Life is a hybrid, part art book and part guide book. The text is supported by unique artwork which has been featured in magazines and posters.
The Dog Lovers’ Guide to the Good Life profiles some of the unusual opportunities that exist for people and dogs to experience together. People do love their pets, significantly their dogs. This beautifully illustrated book features venues that welcome dogs as an important member of the family.
The publication has two teams of dogs willing and eager to check out the good life. The book reflects on a unique bark system, where dogs will help you understand the four legged perspective to better evaluate your choices. The book ends with a chapter encouraging rescue and adoption.
The dog Lovers’ Guide is not only unique, attractive and informative, but also promotes a healthy understanding of our dogs’ needs.
After moving to East Hampton with her husband and her two adorable pet terriers, Carol began painting a series of paintings showing various breeds of canine enjoying the beach, park and sunbathing at the pool. “the paintings were quite different from the architectural painting of New York and Paris that I had been working on for several years and which had brought me some success,” explains Carol.
The artwork is inspired by the canine social scene frolicking and playing with canines at the shore and glamorous pool parties. “Having volunteered with animal rescue groups for quite a few years, I was thrilled to have found a way to combine my passion for painting with my love of animals,” shares Carol.

Later, my film crew and I were invited to Matsulin Restaurant by Owner Kay Lim and Chef Vivian. This authentic Asian eatery is located at 131 West Montauk Highway, Hampton Bays, New York.
Matsulin Restaurant, translated name means pinewoods, offers its patrons a variety of authentic Asian cuisines including Chinese, Japanese, Malaysian, Thai, Vietnamese, with some dishes thrown in from the exotic land Singapore.
The restaurant’s signature dishes include a very tasty Coconut Shrimp and is well known for its Peking Duck . For dessert I attempted ice cream, tempura fried bananas or a combination of the two. This tasty dessert showcases two vertically split bananas in crunchy coats nestled together with bountiful scoops of vanilla ice cream topped with just a drizzle of chocolate sauce.
The restaurants recommended dishes include:
Vietnamese spring rolls, martini shrimp, lettuce wraps, crab cakes, edamame, shrimp
tempura, sushi roll trilogy, spicy seafood salad, salmon sashimi salad, crispy fish, spareribs, pork chops, ayam mangga, tuna soba, spicy long beans, pad Thai, fried banana sundae
Matsulin has developed an enduring appreciation of fine Asian Cuisine through three generations of gourmets. Each of their savory dishes feature their delicate, personal touch, so you can be assured of a one-of-a-kind dining experience.
