News: LIRR Delayed By NJ Transit
(Long Island, N.Y.) Thousands of Long Island Railroad and New Jersey Transit commuter’s experienced massive delays as five trains were canceled for the Tuesday evening rush hour. The LIRR trains affected were on the Babylon and Port Washington branches. Reports stated that the LIRR informed commuters of the situation and gave status updates on a regular basis. Sources claimed that delays are expected to occur throughout the night’s commute.
The New Jersey Transit affected the LIRR because both operate the tracks under Penn Station, using trains from a storage yard in Manhattan. Hundreds of passengers were stranded in intense traffic because a train out of Trenton was derailed upon leaving Penn Station. It was headed toward the Hudson River Tuesday morning and reports stated that widespread cancellations will coincide with the incident.
Sources claimed that no one was harmed during the incident and that the accident occurred just before the tracks narrow to one track upon entering into the tunnel. The three hundred passengers were transferred to a separate train within an hour of the derailment. Reports stated that New Jersey commuters may have to take PATH trains to Hoboken and then switch to their preferred method of service.
Some sources claimed that both incoming and outgoing trains began to share the same tunnel. An accident forced Amtrak and New Jersey Transit Trains to shut down a tunnel between Manhattan and New Jersey. New Jersey Transit made a statement claiming that commuters can expect delays into Penn Station to be up to ninety minutes or more.
Many complained of the heat as they waited amidst the series of delays on their daily commutes. Some passengers in the terminals watched as certain scheduled stops vanished from the display screen early this morning. Others sat quietly and accepted the circumstance.
Reports stated that Amtrak and New Jersey Transit have been pushing for additional tunnels underneath the Hudson to prevent delays when these kinds of incidents occur. New Jersey has not agreed to the proposed price range given to build the additional tunnel.
A similar incident occurred last year when nine of twenty-one stations were delayed due to a derailment. All of the tracks were blocked overnight. Buses, as well as private-carriers, were implemented to help support the passengers who were stranded.
