Plum Beach is a neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. It was named for the beach plums growing in the region. The former and merged names include Plum Island and Plumb Island. The beach is a smudged spit of sand that is just past Sheepshead Bay and part of Gateway National Park.
The Belt Parkway is a major highway in the area. In 1895, Congress had a total of $60,000 to build a lighthouse and fog signal on Plum Beach.
Several captains of ships using the West Passage of Narragansett Bay had been asking for a light at Plum Beach for a number of years. In foggy weather ships avoiding Dutch Island would sometime sail too far west and go aground on the shoal.
In recent years, the Abcore Restoration started on the restoration of the lighthouse. The interior lighthouse was totally cleaned out and the exterior was repainted and repaired. In December a new light was placed in the lighthouse and it was lighted for the first time in 62 years.
Aside from their elegant and style, the Plum Beach Retreat is a comfortable and older West Indian style beach house. It is located directly on uncrowned Plum Beach that has an extremely large living room and dining area.
There is a large, furnished, covered gallery facing the water that makes for both shaded outside relaxing and dining. The second floor is one over-sized master bedroom suite with a private bathroom, screened in porch and a wonderful sea view. The two smaller guest rooms are attached to the main house and share a bathroom.
