Neponsit is an upscale neighborhood located in the borough of Queens, part of the Metropolitan area of New York City on the Rockaway Peninsula. It is part of Queens Community Board 14. The neighborhood is on the western half of the Rockaway Peninsula, the southernmost area of the borough. Neponsit margins the neighborhood of Belle Harbor to the east and Jacob Riis Park on the west. Jamaica Bay and the Atlantic Ocean are within the northern and southern borders, respectively.
The Rockaway Peninsula connects with Long Island at the Nassau County border and runs west directly south of Queens and Brooklyn. Neponsit is just fifteen miles from Manhattan and occupies an area of less than one tenth of a square mile. It has been designated as one of the few “R-1 Zone” locations in New York. This category of zoning forbids any commercial structures and only allows single family homes to be constructed.

Neponsit was originally taken from a Native American name that signifies “The Place between Waters”; the waters of the Atlantic Ocean and of Jamaica Bay or Rockaway Inlet. The neighborhood still has the same character from when it was first established. In January 1910, the Neponsit Realty Company bought the land for the development of an exclusive community. It foreclosed the construction of any homes that were less than three-thousand dollars, and the homes were constructed in order to endure the beach weather and geography of the narrow peninsula. In later years, several high quality homes were predominantly built and still remained up till now. Neponsit is also well known for its aeronautical history. It is home to where the first transatlantic flight had departed.

Another is a very well-known Neponsit Malls which consists of eight landscaped plots located in the center of Rockaway Beach Boulevard. Neponsit Malls also beautifies one of Rockaway’s main thoroughfares.
