News: Long Island On-Duty Cop Hits SUV
(Long Island, N.Y.) An accident occurred at a residential corner in Lindenhurst when a fast-moving Suffolk County police car hit an SUV. While the police officer remains unidentified, the driver of the SUV was revealed as a sixty-five-year-old woman. Both were hospitalized following the incident.
The Suffolk County Police Department claimed that the officer had been responding to a call at the time of the accident. Reports stated that the emergency had to do with an order of protection violation, and that the police officer had been traveling north on North 6th Street. Police and authorities are still investigating the incident and analyzing the cause of the crash.
The sixty-five-year-old woman was airlifted to Stony Brook University Medical Center after being moved into an ambulance taken from the North Lindenhurst Fire Department. A helicopter landed on the baseball field at Albany Avenue Elementary School at roughly a quarter-to-five that evening. She had been traveling east on West John Street at the time of the accident.
Reports have stated that her injuries were not considered life-threatening and that the police officer was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip for minor injuries. The accident occurred after the police officer allegedly went through a stop sign at a high speed. Sources stated that multiple witnesses place blame on the Suffolk County police vehicle, claiming that it did not slow down for the stop.
The driver of the Jeep Cherokee did not have a stop sign at West John Street and her vehicle flipped over upon impact. The Suffolk County Police Department stated that the police officer had turned on his sirens and lights. Nonetheless, witnesses questioned whether she had enough time to hear the sirens and see the lights prior to the collision.
Reports stated that the Suffolk County Police Department has been hesitant to comment on the incident, and has been awaiting further investigation. In the meantime, many followers of the case have unanswered questions concerning the crash, which occurred twenty minutes after four that afternoon. Sources claimed that many residents gathered on the street after the accident, while the helicopter attracted a group of witnesses.
Post-collision images show extensive damage to the SUV, which allegedly sustained the brunt of the accident. The police vehicle showed damage to the front, especially concentrated on the bumper, headlights, and hood. Several reports have labeled the incident as a “serious crash,” claiming that the drivers were fortunate not to have suffered from worse injuries.
In a different incident, a collision occurred on Montauk Highway involving a Long Island cop. Following that accident, authorities on the case conducted a thorough investigation. They claimed that it is standard procedure to investigate when a crash involves a police officer.
