(Long Island, NY) Suffolk County Police Seventh Squad detectives are investigating a motor vehicle crash that killed a bicyclist in Mastic on Wednesday, November 4.
Peter Accardi Jr., was riding his bicycle eastbound, facing westbound traffic on Montauk Highway, near Fulton Avenue when his bicycle swerved from the shoulder into oncoming traffic and collided with a 2013 Ford van at approximately 11 a.m.

Accardi Jr., 61, of Mastic, was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner. The driver of the van, Marybeth Veerman, 51, of Port Jefferson Station, was transported to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue with non-life-threatening injuries. Veerman was issued a Field Appearance Ticket for Aggravated Unlicensed Operation 3rd Degree.
The vehicle was impounded for a safety check. Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to contact Seventh Squad detectives at (631) 852- 8752.
The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty. Defendants are entitled to a fair trial with the burden on the prosecution to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
