College Is only SUNY LI Campus to Join the Initiative
(Long Island, NY) Farmingdale State College has been certified as the first SUNY campus on LI to become a member of the prestigious United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI) program – a worldwide initiative in which academic and research institutions work with the UN to promote global priorities such as peace, human rights, and sustainable development.
UNAI was established in 2010 by UN Secretary-General Ban-ki Moon, with the purpose of aligning academic institutions with the UN’s mandate through activities and research in a shared culture of intellectual social responsibility. Farmingdale joins more than 1,000 colleges, universities, and research institutions in 120 countries involved in the program.
Farmingdale’s first-year commitment is to complete at least one activity or research program in support of UNAI’s 10 guiding principles:
- A commitment to the principles inherent in the United Nations Charter as values that education seeks to promote and help fulfill
- A commitment to human rights, among them freedom of inquiry, opinion, and speech
- A commitment to educational opportunity for all people regardless of gender, race, religion or ethnicity
- A commitment to the opportunity for every interested individual to acquire the skills and knowledge necessary for the pursuit of higher education
- A commitment to building capacity in higher education systems across the world
- A commitment to encouraging global citizenship through education
- A commitment to advancing peace and conflict resolution through education
- A commitment to addressing issues of poverty through education
- A commitment to promoting sustainability through education
- A commitment to promoting inter-cultural dialogue and understanding, and the “unlearning” of intolerance, through education
The program will be spearheaded by Dr. Robert A. Saunders, director of international education and programs, and professor in the Department of History, Politics and Geography.Other campus assets that will contribute to planned activities and research include the School of Engineering Technology; the psychology department; and the Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies program.
The Office of International Education and Programs oversees international student recruitment and assists incoming and current international students with their immigration status and visa matters. OIEP also manages Farmingdale State College’s study abroad programs, including student advisement. It is also responsible for the development and maintenance of the College’s overseas partnerships and articulation agreements in an effort to expand the campus’ internationalization initiatives.
Department of History, Politics and Geography
Part of the School of Arts and Sciences, which enrolls over 3,000 students, Farmingdale State College’s Department of History, Politics and Geography offers courses in American, European, and non-Western history, U.S. and international politics, and human and physical geography. Specialty courses in all disciplines focus on the intersections between science, technology, and culture. HPG is also home to the College’s baccalaureate degree in Science, Technology & Society (STS).
Farmingdale State College continues to prepare students with the education, skills, and critical thinking needed to meet the challenges of tomorrow. As the largest of SUNY’s colleges of technology (with over 8,700 students), Farmingdale equips students with the resources and knowledge sought by today’s emerging industries. Offering bachelor and associate programs, Farmingdale will soon offer its first graduate degree.
