(Long Island, NY) Upon the departure of Sheldon Silver, Assemblyman Montesano (R,C,I-Glen Head) is avidly expressing the need to pass historic ethic reform measures in Albany. Montesano and his colleagues in the Assembly Minority Conference have long called for transparency in the legislature to improve functionality and rid those who abuse public trust.
“Following the recent events that have put the People’s House into disarray, the time is now to put forth real ethics reform in New York,” said Montesano. “It is critical that we work with the new leadership to make significant improvements and focus on restoring public trust. My colleagues and I are encouraging the new speaker to pass the Public Officers Accountability Act, an initiative known to be the toughest ethics reform in the country. This legislation would address the corruption that has wrongfully infiltrated our leadership.”
Montesano and many of his colleagues in the Assembly Minority Conference have introduced The Public Officers Accountability Act, which calls for term limits for legislative leaders and committee chairs, campaign finance and member-item reforms, removing pensions from convicted officials, and replacing the Joint Commission on Public Ethics (JCOPE) with a truly independent integrity panel.
“Albany has been riddled with ethics and corruption charges for far too long,” continued Montesano. “As a member of the Assembly Ethics Committee and the Legislative Ethics Commission, I have always supported legislation that ensures our representatives are held to a higher standard. The great people of New York deserve to be represented with honor and integrity, not corrupt agendas.”
