(Long Island, NY) The Northeast Charter Schools Network today congratulated 11 new charter schools scheduled to open across New York State in the coming years. The SUNY Board of Trustees’ Charter Schools Committee approved eight new schools on Monday. They’ll be located in the Bronx, Queens, and Brooklyn. The State Board of Regents approved three new schools. They’ll be located in Buffalo, Brooklyn, and Manhattan.
Northeast Charter Schools Network New York State Director Andrea Rogers said, “Tens of thousands of names are on waitlists for charter schools across New York State, so we applaud SUNY and the Board of Regents for approving these new schools. The families in these communities – from New York City to Buffalo – will benefit for years to come with the addition of these new charter schools in their neighborhoods.
“We congratulate and thank the charter leaders for their commitment to providing more opportunities to families and children in communities that desperately need them.”
The Board of Regents approved REACH Academy Charter School to open in Buffalo, Brooklyn Laboratory Charter High School which expands on the existing Brooklyn Laboratory Charter School middle school, and WHIN Music Community Charter School to be located in Manhattan. All are scheduled to open in 2017.
The eight new SUNY schools will open across New York City in the coming years. Bronx Charter School for Excellence 3, 4 and 5 will open in the Bronx in 2017, 2018, and 2019– they are modeled after Bronx Charter School for Excellence, which has been named a nationally recognized Blue Ribbon school. The Legacy College Preparatory Charter School will be located in the Bronx, and is scheduled to open in 2017.
The new Brooklyn schools will be: Brooklyn Emerging Leaders Charter Academy scheduled to open in 2017, Uncommon New York City Charter School #1 scheduled to open in 2018.
Queens will see two new schools: Forte Preparatory Academy Charter School and Our World Neighborhood Charter School 2, a replication of Our World Neighborhood Charter School which opened in 2002. Both new schools are scheduled to open in 2017.
