News: Long Island Teen Hit by Train
(Long Island, N.Y.) A Long Island Rail Road train struck a fourteen-year-old boy on Wednesday close to the Bellport station. The boy was critically wounded and taken to Stony Brook University Medical Center to be treated for his injuries. He was listed as being in critical but stable condition as of Wednesday night.
Reports stated that the boy had been throwing rocks at cars traveling along Montauk Highway. The boy was accompanied by a thirteen-year-old who was later arrested. Members of the Suffolk County Police Department accosted the teen after the accident and sources claimed that he will be charged with criminal mischief as a juvenile.
Suffolk County police officers made an incident report after receiving emergency calls from the drivers of the vehicles that were hit. The cars were hit near Station Road, and minutes later the boy was impacted by the moving train. As of today, there have been no known updates in the boy’s condition.
Neither of the boys’ identities has been publicized. Reports have stated that the accident occurred at roughly four-thirty in the afternoon in an area that was not designated for crossing. A spokesman for the Long Island Rail Road claimed that a westbound passenger train due to arrive in Jamaica at ten minutes to six had slowed down to make the scheduled stop in Bellport.
The alleged train had been delayed seventy-five minutes and Metropolitan Transit Authority Police are investigating the accident. In the wee hours of Thursday morning an eastbound train struck and killed a man just east of the Babylon station. It is uncertain whether the man was attempting suicide, and he has not been identified by police and authorities on the case.
Other reports stated that a Jamaica-bound train with eighty passengers was delayed for sixty-six minutes on Thursday. This morning’s accident was one of four involving Metropolitan Transit Authority trains in the last two days. Two people were struck and killed on Metro North lines within the short time period.
The train that allegedly struck the teen in Bellport was a passengers train from Montauk that departed at 2:51 pm. It is uncertain why the teen was on the tracks at the time of the accident, and authorities on the case are investigating the circumstance. This incident occurred a year and six months to the day after a fourteen-year-old girl was struck by an Amtrak train.
