Ways the Long Island Cares Organization Gives to the Community
Long Island Cares is an organization whose goal is to help less fortunate individuals in the Long Island area. This organization provides various programs and aids to help individuals to be well fed and cared for. Some of these wonderful programs will be discussed in the paragraphs which follow and show why Long Island Cares is an extremely worthy organization.
Harry Chapin Food Bank
The Harry Chapin Food Bank was opened by Long Island Cares in February of 1982. The Food Bank works to receive, store and distribute massive quantities of food to various entities such as soup kitchens, shelters, food pantries, group homes and day care centers for the young and old alike. The food is used to address the hunger issues of individuals in both Nassau and Suffolk Counties on Long Island.
New Paths to Achievement Program
The New Paths to Achievement Program was established to present low-income, single females who are in the head of household role with education programs and job training skills which are needed to survive in the workforce. The program is geared toward not only encouraging financial independence in these women but also provide them with the emotional skills and self-esteem levels to help them to better succeed in the future. Women who are involved with the New Paths to Achievement Program came to become involved via community organizations, churches, shelters and clinics. The women who are involved with the program benefit even more as they are surrounded by women who are in the same situations which gives the overall group strength and emotional stability by sharing their experiences with one another.
School Tools
School Tools is a program provided by Long Island Cares that is geared towards the children. As many children who come from low-income families cannot afford to purchase school supplies in order to adequately prepare for the school year, School Tools makes the acquisition of these school supplies possible. By having these supplies, students feel more confident and that much more ready to learn.
Long Island Cares provides these and many other programs for low-income individuals. Helping other individuals via these types of programs is a wonderful way to show that we as citizens truly care for others and Long Island Cares does a great job of helping others who truly need it.
